The Position
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform entry level technical and skilled site development, and on-site and off-site civil inspections in the field for public works and residential projects. Compliance is ordered when violations are discovered. Difficult problems may be referred to a supervisor, but employees work independently in the field and are responsible for making decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment, and familiarity with a variety of codes, ordinances, and construction methods or problems. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed by the Assistant Building Official or assigned project manager. Provide plan review, construction quality assurance through physical inspection of construction site, and project coordination, as well as site development inspections for compliance with Zoning and Design Review Ordinances. These duties are performed for public works construction and private property earthwork for private development construction projects. Incumbents are required to perform a broader range of duties which include field review for first review construction plans submitted for Town approval. Specific plan review duties may include assessing impact of proposed construction on surrounding properties and existing improvements, examining the proposed improvements to determine constructability, and providing written comments on a marked-up plan to the office plan reviewer.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a High School Diploma or G.E.D certificate. Four years experience in general constructions and related fields. Minimum one year experience within a building inspection department or a private inspection agency. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and abilities for the position. Certified in the International Building Code or other adopted construction code, dependent on the needs of the department at time of hiring. *Additional requirements for Building Inspector II and III
