Renee Carstens, Assistant in Extension, 4-H Youth Development UACE – Gila County  

Overview of Position:

This AmeriCorps Program Assistant would assist with the expansion, development, and implementation of youth development programs, with an emphasis in expanding STEM programs.  This member will help to recruit and promote 4-H youth and volunteer participation, reach and engage diverse audiences, network with community agencies, contribute to 4-H social networking sites, and coordinate mentor program with Miami Unified School District and Payson Community School.

Program Location:  Position based at 5515 S. Apache Ave. Suite 600, yet will work throughout Gila County in the following communities: Miami, Globe, San Carlos, Tonto Basin, Payson, Pine, Strawberry and Young.

Member Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate mentor program at 2 sites: Miami Unified School District and Payson Community School.
  • Assist with recruitment, enrollment, screening, orientation, registration, support and training of local volunteers.
  • Assist with recruitment and enrollment of youth members.
  • Expand STEM programing throughout Gila County via classroom lessons, afterschool programs, special events, Club meetings, etc…
  • Provide program information to media, partners and stakeholders, and support social media postings.
  • Promote Gila County 4-H though “4-H Cares” campaign.
  • Assist agent with social media and written communications.
  • Assist youth members with documenting participation of activities, projects, awards, etc. in 4-H online account.

Minimum Qualifications & Skill requirements:

  • Applicants must meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements for age, citizenship, etc.  
  • Student at a community college or university within Arizona or had some college.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license, clean driving record and two years of driving experience.
  • Able to lift 30 pounds.
  • Working knowledge of 4-H youth development.
  • Skills in public relations/marketing.
  • Strong personal commitment to the success of the programs.
  • Interest and experience with social media.
  • Enjoys working as a team member and able to work independently at times.

  • The member will average of 15-18 hours per week, which may include evenings and/or weekends.
